My Boss Asked Me to 'Vibe Check' a Spreadsheet at 11 PM

It was my first week with a new manager. He was the kind of guy who said 'circling back' and meant it. He kept a small plant on his desk and named it Greg. He'd come from a startup that closed in eleven months. He called that 'a good run.' He said things like 'let's socialize that' about the coffee machine and the parking lot. At 11:14 on a Wednesday night, my phone buzzed. It was a Slack message: 'hey — can you vibe check the Q3 projections? just want to make sure the energy is right before the board sees them.' I stared at the ceiling for a while. I am a financial analyst. The file was all numbers — sales, costs, profit. There was no energy in it. There were no vibes. There was just a spreadsheet and a note I think he wrote himself. I typed back, 'the energy is bullish.' I put my phone down and went to sleep. I slept fine. The next morning he wrote back one word: 'exactly.' He never asked me to look at a number. He never brought it up again. The numbers went to the board. The board said yes. The quarter went fine. That was eight months ago. Since then I have vibe-checked a report, a contract, a layoff memo, and an org chart I'm pretty sure had a typo. Every time I say something confident and vague. Every time he says 'exactly.' Every time the document goes through with no changes. I don't know if I have a job, a personality, or just a weird power that runs on the word 'exactly.' Greg the plant died in month four. I said nothing. He got a new one. He named it Greg II. I vibe-checked it. The energy was prickly.

I rely on stuff like this to stay grounded.

That sounds like a really difficult experience.

That is exactly why I memorize every page of the staff manual.

That hit way too close to home.
