The Karen Who Filed an HR Complaint Against a Mannequin

It was a Tuesday that felt heavy with the specific, soul-crushing hum of fluorescent lighting—the kind that makes every aisle look like a staged crime scene. The big-box store was dead, the silence of the mall seeping through the sliding glass doors like a draft. I was folding graphic tees near the women’s section, listening to the monotonous cycle of a soft-rock playlist that had been looping since opening, when I heard the sharp, frantic intake of breath. A woman in a loud, floral-print blouse stood dead center in the main aisle, her knuckles white as she gripped her young daughter’s hand. She wasn't looking at the clothes. She was staring, with genuine, trembling malice, at the mannequin near the fitting rooms. 'It’s staring at her,' the woman hissed, her voice vibrating with a weird, defensive energy. I looked over. The mannequin was standard issue—faceless, frozen in a mid-stride pose, wearing a beige cardigan and a scarf that had been on clearance since the first frost of October. It was staring at nothing, a blank void of fiberglass. I walked over, my customer service voice already rehearsed. 'Is everything okay, ma'am?' I asked. 'That thing,' she said, pointing a manicured finger. 'It’s judging her. It’s been watching us since we walked in. It needs to be moved.' I blinked. 'It’s bolted to the floor, ma'am. It’s just display furniture.' She didn't buy it. She demanded a manager with the intensity of someone reporting a major crime. Enter Devon. Devon was nineteen, still sporting a nametag that hadn't quite settled into place. He’d been promoted from the shoe department just three days prior because our last manager had walked out mid-shift, leaving nothing behind but a post-it note on the register that simply read 'sorry.' Devon was still in the 'fake it until you make it' phase of management. He listened to the woman rant about 'unprofessional vibes' and 'psychological harm' with a neutral, slightly confused expression. 'We take this very seriously, ma'am,' Devon said, his voice cracking slightly. He looked at me, then back at her, clearly searching for a manual that didn't exist. Two days later, the absurdity solidified into reality. An official HR complaint notification pinged in the store email. It was addressed to 'The Mannequin, c/o Management.' It was a two-page manifesto demanding that the mannequin be either relocated, retrained, or removed from the store floor entirely, citing it as a 'hostile presence.' I read the email twice, convinced it was a prank, but the tone was terrifyingly sincere. Devon sighed, leaned against the registers, and rubbed his temples. 'Fine,' he muttered. 'Put Brenda in the back.' We gave the mannequin a name, Brenda. We hauled her into the stockroom, tucking her between a pallet of broken hangers and boxes of clearance candles that smelled like fake vanilla. For two weeks, Brenda lived in the dark. During our fifteen-minute breaks, we’d duck into the stockroom to pay our respects. We’d move her arms, posing her as if she were in time-out, staring at a blank cinderblock wall. We built a life for her: she was going through a messy divorce, she had a timeshare in Florida that was currently tied up in legal disputes, and she had a deep, abiding hatred for the fluorescent hum of the sales floor. When Brenda finally returned to the floor, it was as if nothing had changed, except for the tiny patch of floor where she’d been bolted back down. Two hours later, the floral-shirt woman returned. She walked right up to the mannequin, looked her up and down, and gave a sharp, satisfied nod, as if she had successfully negotiated a truce with a diplomat. She proceeded to buy three of the beige cardigans without even glancing at the sizing, clearly feeling she had cleared the air. Devon thanked her, his face a masterpiece of professional detachment. I rang her up in silence, bagging the sweaters and wishing Brenda a quiet, internal goodbye. I still walk past Brenda every shift. Sometimes, when the store is empty and the lights are humming, I glance at her profile. I wonder what she saw in those two weeks in the dark. I wonder if she knows more than any of us. Somewhere, in the back room of some other store, I like to think there is another mannequin, maybe one with a name like Susan, currently filing an HR complaint about us.
